Infineon Launches New ZVS Flyback Converter Chipset for USB-C Power Delivery Adapters and Charging Devices
As USB-C power delivery (PD) charging becomes increasingly popular, there is a surge in demand for compatible charging solutions that are both potent and compact. To cater to this market requirement, Infineon Technologies AG has unveiled the EZ-PD PAG2, a secondary-side controlled zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) flyback converter chipset. Composed of the EZ-PD PAG2P and EZ-PD PAG2S, the chipset smoothly integrates USB PD functionality, a synchronous rectifier, and a PWM controller. It ensures efficient power transmission and isolation between primary and secondary sides through the pulse-edge transformer (PET) CYPET121. Designed to support cutting-edge non-complementary active-clamp flyback (NCP-ACF) and quasi-resonant flyback with zero voltage switching (QR-ZVS) architectures, the chipset is perfectly suited for high-performance USB-C adapters, chargers, and travel adapters that prioritize efficiency.
The EZ-PD PAG2 series is a multi-faceted power delivery solution suitable for diverse applications, supporting the PD 3.1 standard power range (SPR) with a programmable power supply (PPS) feature as well as a 28 V extended power range (EPR) for rapid and secure charging. Compatible with an extensive range of power outputs, the chipset aligns with multiple charging standards, including BC v1.2, AFC, Apple's proprietary charging protocol, and QC5.0. Its support for a universal AC input ranging from 90 to 265 V (AC) significantly broadens its applicability across varying geographic regions.
The chipset's design includes programmable soft-start capabilities, attainable via an external soft-start capacitor, for smooth power ramp-up. It supports various conduction modes like discontinuous (DCM), critical (CrCM), and continuous (CCM), as well as burst and skip modes to accommodate different load scenarios. Its versatility renders it suitable for various regional power grids and device requirements. Through its comprehensive feature set, the EZ-PD PAG2 series guarantees efficient, adaptable power management to meet a spectrum of needs.
The EZ-PD PAG2 product family is comprised of four targeted products:
- EZ-PD PAG2S-AC, a secondary-side ACF controller that excels in energy efficiency and recycling, bundled with USB-PD protocol capabilities.
- EZ-PD PAG2S-QZ focuses on QR-ZVS flyback control and is also equipped with USB-PD protocol features.
- EZ-PD PAG2P serves as a primary-side HV startup controller, amalgamating diverse functionalities for boosted system efficiency. Its features include high-voltage startup, PET receiver, gate drivers, and fault protection mechanisms. Among these is also an x-cap discharge functionality and a VCC boost converter.
- EZ-PD PAG2S-PS functions as a combined USB PD and synchronous-rectification (SR) controller, apt for integration with other PWM controllers. It shines with a shunt voltage regulator for stable voltage and current control via optocouplers and delivers best-in-class SR performance with swift turn-on/off times. Furthermore, it utilizes volt-second integration to avert improper SR activation.
