Infineon and Wolfspeed Extend Long-term Silicon Carbide Wafer Supply Deal for 150 mm Wafers
Infineon Technologies AG, a powerhouse in the semiconductor industry for power solutions and IoT, joins forces with Wolfspeed, another titan in silicon carbide technology, to bolster and extend their pre-existing supply deal for 150 mm silicon carbide (SiC) wafers, first established in February 2018. This enhanced alliance includes a multi-year agreement to ensure ample wafer capacity. It shores up Infineon's supply chain, particularly against the backdrop of spiking demand for silicon carbide semiconductor components in sectors like automotive, solar, electric vehicle (EV) technology, and energy storage.
Infineon's CEO, Jochen Hanebeck, stated, "With the surging interest in silicon carbide devices, our strategy involves multiple sources to assure continuous access to a top-tier, widespread, and enduring 150 mm and 200 mm SiC wafer supply. By renewing our relationship with Wolfspeed, we're bolstering Infineon's supply stability for the future. For over two decades, our collaboration with Wolfspeed has been instrumental in delivering silicon carbide's potential to the automotive, industrial, and energy sectors, aiding our clients in embracing this energy-saving tech and advancing decarbonization."
The market for silicon carbide power solutions is witnessing a boom, spurring advancements that are more compact, lighter, and cost-efficient while enhancing energy conversion, thus catalyzing green energy technologies. In line with this demand growth, Infineon is strategically broadening its supplier circle to ensure a steady provision of premium silicon carbide substrates.
Wolfspeed's President and CEO, Gregg Lowe, noted, "Wolfspeed leads the charge in the silicon carbide industry, propelling the shift towards SiC while ramping up our production capabilities. We provide exceptional materials to pivotal clients like Infineon, who spearhead the automotive and industrial sectors, even as we expand our manufacturing reach. Forecasts suggest that the need for silicon carbide materials and devices will escalate substantially through to 2030, creating an annual market opportunity worth about $20 billion. We are thrilled to sustain our partnership with Infineon and to remain a key SiC wafer supplier for the foreseeable future."
